Trump slaps 100pc tariffs on Australian drugs – with exceptions

3 April 2026 - Australian drug makers that do not build new factories in America and dramatically cut their prices for US consumers will be hit with 100% tariffs, putting pressure on the Albanese Government to do a trade deal to protect smaller, innovative firms.

President Donald Trump signed a maximum 100% tariff on patented pharmaceuticals into law on Thursday (Friday AEDT). The rate is reduced to 20% for companies that build new onshore production facilities before his term ends in 2028.
